The Sounds of Silencers

Created for Silence! McGill Art History and Communication Studies Emerging Scholars Conference, 24 April 2015 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

About
This piece comes from an interest in exploring how subcultures communicate through both what they say and what they do not say, both in words and through other modes of communication. I'm particularly interested in the volume of vernacular knowledge that accumulates on the internet—especially moving images. This piece uses a close viewing of videos about sound suppressors—commonly known as silencers—to consider both knowledge and personal identification and presentation amongst a specific subculture of firearms owners in America.

Following this piece I have created two others, Walk This Way and La Nuit Americaine, that look at similar online subcultures.
